The author, Helen Yu, begins the chapter detailing her desire to scale Mount Everest with the goal of spreading her grandmother's ashes. With no prior practice or experience, it seems like an insurmountable task. Her parents even suggest taking the easy or more practical way out by having a helicopter do it instead. Yu is committed to seeing this huge task through herself however.
She the equates this to what business owners face when they create their first start-up. This seemingly insurmountable task before them that others may not fully understand the motivation behind. A founder must have a firm grasp on why they are doing what they are doing before embarking on that journey.
Yu then breaks down deciding to start up for yourself into 5 decisions. Why are you on this journey? What problems are you solving? What does success look like to you? How will you honor your brand? How will you prepare for the climb? Each of these must have a clear answer in order to develop your goals and detail plans on how you will achieve them. Start-ups take work and often times personal sacrifice, you don't just wake up one day on top of the mountain.
