The eighth chapter of Surfing the Tsunami discusses options on learning more about AI going forward. Keeping up to date on news and exploring available tools are a must as things change fast in this field. After becoming more adept, reading more books and perhaps taking more courses are the next step.
Two books that are suggested readings after you have the basics down are Machine Learning: The New AI (The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series) and Deep Learning (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series).
Courses are probably the best way to develop expertise in AI as you are in a community with a mentor as this isn't an easy field to understand on your own. Both local options at a community college or online classes are adequate but an in person class would probably be preferable as you have direct access to an instructor/mentor.
